Croton capitatus, C. glandulosus or C. argyranthemus. This genus is the host of the Goatweed Leafwing butterfly.
Where can I buy seeds of "wooly croton"?
Croton capitatus (woolly croton OR doveweed OR hogweed) is considered an invasive weed in some states, so be careful.
It probably isn't available commercially, so you'll have to try to find it growing wild. Seeds should germinate easily.

What could a Codiaeum variegatum plant worth? (Croton Petra)?
Could someone advise me on how much the colourful Croton Petra plant worth? I bought it when it was very tiny and now its huge and I'd like to sell it. Its very healthy, had some strange flowers growing on it recently, and its very colourful. Its probably around 35 inches tall and 40 inches wide if not bigger. Its gorgeous but has no space for it anymore. Its becaming a beautiful tree.
I've attached a link that shows how it looks like but mine is actually bigger than what you see on that site.
Any ideas how much this plant could worth? I'd like to sell it asap but I don't want to overcharge anyone for it. Thank you!

Aggghh, plant advice needed for my croton.?
My croton house plant is looking not so good. I water it with Miracle Grow nutrient about ever 2 weeks. It is in a big pot. It used to look all leafy but now it is looking a sadder version of it's former self. It is losing leaves even green looking leaves not just dead ones. Is this just seasonal? It looked fine this summer.
I keep it by a west facing window sill it has been there for about 18 months or more.
What is going on?
Aggghh, plant advice needed for my croton.?
My advice is that:
either of the results have happened
1. over watered and fed too much
2. two dry , feed has killed the roots of the plant/
2,5 you have water the plant through the top of the plant i.e the feed / water has touched the leaves
3. the plant is in a draughty place/ perhaps too cold of a room
Reply:Hi, I wonder if your plant is receiving enough light now that we are in Autumn when there is shortage of daylight especially with all the dull weather we have had recently.
Also. in my opinion, they do not need so much water at this time of year and not so much feeding.

Reply:Your giving it to much water, and way to much fertiliser. They like to be kept moist, but not wet. They need allot of humidity, and at least 4 hrs. of sun each day. Feed every other month from early spring thru mid- summer. Don't feed them after that. I have mine outside right now and it's doubled in height. Also look around the stem where the leafs start to grow, for Mealy Bugs. Those are whitish cottony looking things . If you have them ,use a cotton swab and rubbing Alcohol to wipe them off. Byee
Reply:well,i am sure u love it as u r so worried. Its due to the season and this is the time to prune trees i would rather u give it a good trim and the new leaves will make u hapy soon. happy gardening

Is it possible to inhale a croton and if so, can it cause permanent damage to my lungs?
If I accidentally inhaled a croton, or even a sunflower seed during eating, will it remain in my lungs forever? Can it damage my lungs and effect my breating? Are there long term effects or will it eventually break down into my bloodstream?
Is it possible to inhale a croton and if so, can it cause permanent damage to my lungs?
the lungs are able to break down some foods and carry them away but it can cause an infection in some cases. if you develope a cough you should go see a doctor. good luck, i hope all is well.
Reply:If you had a crouton go down the wrong way, you would have suffered the worst, and longest, coughing fit of your life. This is not to mention you'd have a ragingly high fever by now.
The cough reflex is triggered or even if material hasn't entered the lungs, or even the foreign body hasn't gone below the vocal cords (the valve at the top of the trachea). In fact, it gets triggered any time material goes below the epiglottis and into the upper airway. Even one small drop of saliva will cause the cough reflex to trigger violently.
The most likely scenario is that you coughed it up and immediately swallowed it unknowingly.
Reply:I don't have an answer but i have to tell you, I had a good laugh
Reply:It is possible to inhale a crouton, yes. It will remain in your lungs causing infection and aspiration pneumonia. You will need to have it removed by bronchoscopy. The doctor goes down into your lungs with a long tube with a camera on the end and is able to grab out the foreign body. If you do not get it removed, you will continue to have repeated lung infections. Unfortunately, the lungs have no digestive juices. I have seen an entire cashew removed this way.

How can I keep my Croton Plant from losing leaves?
I have a Croton Plant and no matter where i put it in my house it drops leaves all the time. Almost everyday when I come home from work a leaf is on the ground. The plant is starting to look rather sad and I really want to bring it back. Can anyone please help me. Thanks,
How can I keep my Croton Plant from losing leaves?
Make sure the plant is not in a draft ( to include coming from the furnace ). Crotons don't like drafts.
I've had mine for 20 years. It stays in my living room about three feet from a south facing window. I call it Goliath because it is so big. It doesn't color up because it doesn't have enough sun but it is healthy and the leaves are a beautiful dark green with chartruese on them like paint splatters.
The plant drops a few leaves twice a year but otherwise holds its' foliage.
In 20 years I have never seen one bug on it. It is one of my most robust houseplants.
Reply:your watering it too much.when a plant starts to drop its leaves like that your over watering it.put your finger in about 1/2 inch if the soil is dry water it if not leave it alone.thats the knew rule for the plant if you want to save your plant you must do this.
Reply:crotons are sun loving plants. it will surely loose its leaves if kept indoors too long. aside from that, colored leaves tend to revert back to green. aphid infestation is likely to happen also. hope this would help you
Reply:What color are the leaves when they fall off? In most house plants there are several reasons for plants to loose their leaves.
1.If they curl and fall - too little heat, over-watering, or cold droughts.
2.New plants will often loose lower leaves if are moved from room to room.
3.leaves dry up and fall - too little light, too much heat or under-watering.
4. leaves turn yellow and fall - over-watering or cold droughts.
Give the plant time to adjust to an area. Make sure they are in the right size pot. And don't place near a vent where heat or air directly hits them.
Reply:lots of good answers above me so I'll just add
a lot of the plants that are produced commercially are planted in soilless mix that wears out. When this happens the water just runs through it and puts stress on the plant. Make sure that the soil is retaining water. You can add soil to the pot a good brand not a cheapy one. Pack it in around the edges. A lot of times this will help a newly acquired plant. Also sometimes there is an accumulation of water at the bottom of decorative containers so always make sure plants aren't sitting in water.
by the way , waiting on spring should be picked for the top answer, most practical hopeful one given.
Reply:Crotons are actually difficult plants to keep inside. They prefer very bright light and lots of humidity, neither of which is a normal indoor condition. They're also very susceptible to a number of pests, most notably mites and mealy bugs.
If you live just about anywhere north and west of Florida or southeastern Texas, you probably won't have a lot of luck keeping a Croton at its best. If you live in the West in any sort of desert, just give up now.

I found a snail on my croton plant?
All of a sudden a month after getting my croton plant I was watering it and found a snail on it!!!
How do I know if it's alive? Where the heck are croton plants imported from? I live in MN, it's cold... where did it come from and it must have stayed stuck on the plant the whole ride from wherever it was brought from?
Today someone told me it's going to suck all the juice out of my plant... is that true? I don't want to kill it!!
Can I keep it as a pet?! Lol... I don't know WHAT it would eat...
I found a snail on my croton plant?
Yes snails will eat plants, just like slugs eatting hosta's. Another nasty little thing about them is that they are asexual, so it only takes one of them to do the tango and make more snails. I would get rid of it, you don't want them in your house if you have plants.
I would imagine if you wanted to keep it, you would need to keep it in a enclosed space and you could probably feed it lettuce or spinich leaves.
Reply:It may have hatched out of the soil. Gently place it outside where it can live happily ever after.
(Crotons are tropical plants and imported here from much farther south.)

Small cubes of grilled or deep fried bread, generally served with soup.

Reply:Are you sure it's not crouton? This is small roasted pieces of bread usually used in soup.
Reply:It's crouton. A crouton is a small piece of bread fried on either side until it's crunchy. You should always use stale bread for this. It tastes great when added to soups or salads.
Serving suggestion: cut into heart shapes and dip the wide part into chopped parsley before serving. It looks beautiful!

Reply:Well let's hope it's CROUTON, 'cos if it's CROTON OIL, don't put that in your food, as it's a strong purgative. I've got a potted Croton plant. Croutons are any variety of cubed stale bread, lightly tossed in Canola or Olive oil and maybe herbs, and/or Parmesan cheese, and roasted, spread on a baking tray, in the oven until crisp and golden. When cool, can then be stored in a sealed container for a few days, and even recrisped under the grill. They have many uses, but are good as a garnish floating on top of a bowl of hot or chilled soup.

My CROTON plant needs help!?
mother, recently passed away and I am the new owner of her beautiful Croton that was my grandmother's.
I do not have a green thumb by any means and I am quite nervous that the plant will die in it's new home.
I water it once a week and have it in the corner of my kitchen near my patio door. It receives indirect sunlight.
Recenlty, the leaves have been dropping off, slowly and I am not sure what to do about it.
It did receive a "shock" a few weeks back when another plant fell on it and kind of pushed it off kilter. Two days later, I moved it to my house.
Subesquently, I put some stakes in it to make it straighter.
It looks healthy so I don't understand why the leaves keep falling.
Any help you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated.

needs lots of light. must be kept moist.(not standing in water)pebbles in a dish with pot standing on it would go down a treat

now need stability and t l c. and a good plant food.

CROTON QUESTION help?
I have had a Croton for almost twenty years now and I don't water it until it dires out a bit. I've had the leaves droop and I've had the plant lose some leaves but I've never had the leaves get mushy.
It might be suffering a mild shock from being moved.
Let it rest for a couple of days. I have found that mine doesn't like drafts. Check and see if where you moved it to is drafty.
Reply:your plant is suffering from shock let it get used to the indoor change and then take it from there make sure you water as necessary in order for it to adjust to the inside change try putting it in a sunny location remember the plant is used to an out doors area whereas you bring it inside the conditions are alot different
Reply:I've grown a couple in pots, this year, from 2-inch pots, to 12-inch pots now. Always indoors, because this is Arizona. We've just about finished with 90F in the day. Now we're at risk from frost in a few weeks.
Mine gets quite a bit of sunlight, being under a South-facing window. I had a problem a while back, when I didn't open the blinds for a week %26amp; the leaves went yellow %26amp; drooped.
If the leaves are getting mushy - are they being OVER-watered ? I do water most days. But not very much.
SO - check off:
1. light.
2. water.
3. food.
4. dry air.
5. Humidity.
Good luck - they're great plants, even if they are a bit fussy.

What type of croton do I have?
I bought a croton the other day and i found there are so many types and I was wondering if anyone knows what type I have. Here is a link to see what my croton looks like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ppObF4_P8...
What type of croton do I have?
do you and loni know each other because you are asking the same questions.
Bell is a brand name for plants
the plant companies name their plant varieties to get copyrights for propagating
all crotons need the same care
high light
the warmer and brighter it is the more water they will actually use
Crotons must have bright light to grow, the companies that sell them will tell you that they need medium light because they are 'seasonal' in the way that they grow. Crotons grow more in summer than they do in the winter.
do you really need this info?
i could add if you want or just e-mail me the real question.
Reply:If the croton you bought didn't have any info. about what type it was, but you LIKED it, I don't understand why you have such a burning desire to know exactly what TYPE croton it is? Just love it like it is. %26lt;G%26gt;
Reply:It's hard to tell from the clip because the leaves are small.
This site has a few you could look at; it also notes that there are 750 varieties!

I have a spotted croton that has grown a vine with what looks to be small flowers causing the plant to lean.?
I received what I have been told is a spotted croton about 4 years ago as a gift. It was about 8 inches tall and has grown to be over 5 feet tall. Its leaves come out of what seems to be a thin tree trunk (yes it has changed to a bark like trunk) and they spiral around it to maintain its balance as the trunk is very thin. The leaves are dark green with yellow spots.
The top of the plant has developed a vine that appears to have small blooms(?) they are very thin and yellow/white. They now have a yellow/green sap near the center of each flower. This vine is causing the plant to bend over.
Is there a way to straighten the plant at the top? The growth pattern of the leaves prevent inserting a pole to tie the plant to. Should I remove this new growth? I am leary of cutting it since I don't know if the plant will continue to grow if I do that.

it really just needs support, they have large supports at Lowes or any garden center that are cone shaped, or many other shapes, im sure there is something that will suit it, maybe if its close to a wall or another tree you can tie it to something, i dont think cutting it would hurt it any but it s sounds like a nice plant i wouldnt want to
The top of the plant has developed a vine that appears to have small blooms(?) they are very thin and yellow/white. They now have a yellow/green sap near the center of each flower. This vine is causing the plant to bend over.

Strange croton growth?
I have a croton that is about 1m tall. for the past 2 years it has hs very unusal bushy tip growth. the stem has grown to be about 5cm X 1/2cm wide kind of like a fan but with multiple new growth all over the top of it. the plant looks healthy but is very strange.
It is a fine leafed croton which i grew from a cutting. i have others of this type, but they all appear normal. Could it be a chromosomal mix up? I have checked it for disesae and it appears fine
Strange croton growth?
you have mealy bug;get a spray bottle mix 50%watter 50% alcohol %26amp; add one teaspoon of soft soap (like the kind for hands)put in sink or tub %26amp; wash it top %26amp; bottom.mealy will spred to your ather plants.i hate them.
Reply:What is going on is a condition called brooming. You may have heard of it ...its is more comon in conifers. It is the reason why we have many of our dwarf varieties of conifers in fact. What you can do is clip off the unusual massing and grow see if you can get it to root...if so you may be onto a new cultivar of dwarf croton. Check the parent stock for any other unusual growth. Chances are you might get some ...but then again you might not.
Good Luck with it.
Reply:Well from one of my source books:
Some Croton(Codiaeum) grows outdoors, cool spells maybe the cause. As you are aware these plants like lots of heat.It is not a good house plant unless there is high humidity with heat that is provided. Then outdoor exposure deepends on variety. Plus needs regular misting. Then have you checked to see if this plant maybe root bound. If you have not replanted the plant in two years you usually need to repot in a new pot twice the size that it is in now.
Example: If currently in a 4" pot then needs to be repotted into a
6" or 8" if roots are grown around in circles. Then trim little roots off then add Plant harmon or Vietminium B-1 or Miraclegrow Plant Liquid Plant Food. Good Luck:

a 1m tall croton? thats a big salad!
Reply:It's more likely a hormonal problem, or physical/insect-damaged growing tip that has caused the lateral gowth. I wouldn't worry about it, enjoy the novel form.

Croton Care? Plant is losing all its leaves :(?
My husband purchased a Croton(about 1 hand high from the soil) and also a 'RubberTree' plant(about 4ft) early January. The 'RubberTree' is making new leaves like crazy but the Croton is losing all of its leaves. They become very thin like wet paper starting at the tips and then the color gets all muddy also. He feels really bad and I have never kept 'indoor' plants before. The house is about 78-82 degrees most of the time and @ nights it gets a little chilly about 72-78. He waters it to keep the dirt moist . THere is very little to none of the runoff. The little guy only has two of its original 5 leaves left and my husband bought some Miracle-Gro indoor plant food spikes to try and save him.
He is in an 8in(wide) clay pot with drainage saucer.
So what should we do? Should we put it outside? Cuz I think it is really an outdoor plant. We live in South Texas the weather is beautiful 77deg with sunny skies..i think Spring started already.
Thank you in advance for the help
Croton Care? Plant is losing all its leaves :(?
Sounds like your croton has been exposed to cold temperatures. They like it 'hot'.
Crotons will defoliate in cold weather and freeze at 32 degrees.
If the stem is still firm and solid, move it outside to a protected bright spot (bring inside if temps go below 40 overnight). It should develop new leaves.
If the stem is soft and spongy - give it a proper burial.

Croton plant starting to limp?
I have one of those colourful croton house plant and its starting to limp big time i watered it and fertilized it like i am suppose to got my information online from a croton forum anyways i would an opinion should i wait it out or just throw the plant out?
Croton plant starting to limp?
They do best when they get 4 or more hours of direct sunlight a day. The night temp should be 65-70 deg F. Daytime: 75-85 is ideal. The leaves drop off in a draft especially in winter. Keep soil barely moist at all times--not wet. Fert with a 5-10-5 in March and May and not for the rest of the year. All-purpose potting soil is fine.
Reply:I've had my Croton for 20 years. Usually if mine is looking limp it's because it needs a drink. It might be because of a draft. Crotons hate drafts to include from the furnace. Make sure there's no air blowing on it.
Reply:Repot it into a larger pot with fresh potting soil. It may be root bound.
Bert
Reply:wipe off leaves with soapy water may be dusty or have bugs. this will take care of both.

I have a croton bell plant the colourfull one. When i got it home I transplanted it and waterd it good. The next day it wilted big time. Croton.......you need to talk to steve or are you one person?
Use a gro light to supplement the light.
you can leave it on 24 hrs a day and the croton will like every bit of it. A regular light bulb will not do, it must be a gro light. 12-20 inches away from the plant- your hand should be able to make a distinct shadow.
Wilting may be caused by too much water, too cold temperature, a draft or soil that is too dry.
Crotons can handle being very root bound, it will not bother them. They don't like thier roots disturbed.
They like humidity. you can rinse the leaves and it will help . Just make sure you do this without adding water to the soil.
When you repotted it did the roots look ok, there should have been a lot that were white and firm. Dead roots are wiry, hollowed brown and black.
You may have made a common mistake- repotting a newly acquired plant.
Plants rarely need to be repotted as soon as you buy them
they are sold by the pot size and many times have been put in pots that are already too large for the size of their roots.
I grew crotons commercially and at home for years.
Temp- above70,
feed 1/4 strength
light-bright.

Gold dust croton how to take care of it.?
Give it plenty of indirect light. A bright room near a window, but be careful of direct sun. Water only when it feels dry down about 1 inch. Just stick your finger in the soil, if it's moist wait. Give it a light feeding of houseplant food about every 4-6 weeks.

Reply:Crotons need very bright light, if not direct sunlight in order to maintain their colors. It should be placed in a window that gets at least 4 hours of afternoon sun, like a south or west window. They like to be kept relatively dry. That may be why yours is wilting. Transplanting is hard on plants. Cut your transplanted croton back by half, and let it dry out. It should begin to get new growth when the daytime temps stay above 70 degrees.
