I cannot seem to keep a croton alive. The leaves keep falling off. Am I overwatering or underwatering? Does it need to be misted? I have it in a west window.
Help with my plant please.?
This plant needs warmth %26amp; reasonable humidity.Where cool and drafty, or air is dry, most lightly the leaves will fall. Give maxium light, but avoid direct sunlight.
Reply:Take it out of your window %26amp; of course it needs 2 be misted
Reply:Crotons grow in a tropical environment. I have them in the garden and in pots. They don't grow too well indoors for lengthy periods.

Why does my eye burn???
My right eye is burning SO bad. It's been burning for the last three days, and it's worse today. Yesterday, my sister brought home house plants. Is it an allergy? Could it be something else?
The plants were: an orchid, a croton, and a bromelaid. I looked them all up, and it doesn't look like they cause burning/itchy eyes.
It feels like someone just sprayed pepper spray into my right eye, and it's felt like that all day!
Why does my eye burn???
You need to rinse your eye with a lot of water. If that does not help, you should buy some eye wash at the pharmacy. Is your eye red? You could see a doctor for this as well.
Note that the Croton plant has a white sap that can be very irritating to mucus membranes.

Dividing large tropical houseplants?
i recently bout some nice large tropicals, like a dieffenbachia(dumbcane) and a croton, there are bout four separate plants in each pot , can i divide them up? it is spring so i thought bout doing it cause they are to big
Dividing large tropical houseplants?
not a good idea.
they have been growing together a long time and the roots are all tangled together.
since you just got them recently it would be better to leave them in the pots they came in for a while so you know any stress that they may have is from your new care not from having their roots ripped apart.
it will not hurt the plants to be growing together at all. both plants actually do better when a little root bound.

ok well u r nearly 15... i wouldnt tell him i know its lying etc, but still... i mean 4 years is alot 3 years just makes it sound that much better lol ;) good luck!!
Reply:You should tell him... you don't want to start your relationship out on a lie. He probably won't care... seriously. I mean if he thinks he's dating a 15 yo than he's not going to care if your really 14. Tell him though... he may not trust you if he finds out on his own someday.
Reply:As long as u dont get involved like sexually, its like all legal, but make sure that this guy doesnt wanna just get in ur pants. See ur still nieve, and even though you think you understand, he's more expierienced than you. But if he treats u w/ respect, and you just see eachother occasionally, i dont think its 2 bad. But just be carefull.
Reply:im 14 too but either way hes too old for you whether u were 14 or 15 so it shouldnt matter

Where should I say I from?
I'm 18 and I was born in brooklyn, Ny and moved to Yonkers when I was 4. Since my dad still lived in Brooklyn I would go there every other weekend and summers. When I was 10 I moved to Croton-on-Hudson (in westchester county ). Then when I was 12 I moved to Georgia. After I just turned 18 I moved to Pheonix. Now, when people asked me where am I from what do I say? or what do I say when someone asks me i where grew up? or is it the same thing? If somene ask I usually say NY and then they ask what part and don't know I should say if I am from Yonkers or Brooklyn. I usually say Brooklyn though.
Where should I say I from?
I grew up in MA, lived in ME, moved to CA.
People in CA ask me where I'm from when they want to know in which city I live. I ask them to specify whether they mean where I was born/raised or where I currently live.
If I were you, regarding the question from the "where were you born/raised?" perspective, I'd just say NYC but moved to GA when you were twelve. Most people you meet won't differentiate between NYC and NY state, let alone different counties and boroughs. If they do ask which part of NY you can say you spent time in Brooklyn, Yonkers, and Croton-on-Hudson.
The only people who will really care which part of NY you identify with are other people from NY. Others are usually perfectly satisfied with a more general answer.
If you feel a stronger sense of belonging to any one place then that is where you are from. It's where your heart is from.
Reply:Which place do you relate most closely to? I would use that, then explain further if asked or the situation warrants it.
Many people say something along the line of "New York but I live in arizona now".
Reply:Ive had more adresses than birthdays just USA I guess

Which is at your preference out of these indoor plants? Why?
Croton
Fern
Which is at your preference out of these indoor plants? Why?
Ferns not only look delicate, they also require delicate care. Ferns are a little too fussy for me. Crotons are delightfully very attractive because of the bright multi-colorings, and they come in a variety of shapes. Leaves may be green, yellow, red, purple, bronze, pink or any combination of these colors. As long as you provide tropical conditions - bright light, warm temperature, humidity, plenty of water, your plant will be happy and will give you a nice living display in your house. See picture of one: http://www.citrusheightsflorist.com/cate...
Reply:Croton ..It has bold rich colors but it needs bright light which I don't have so I grow them under lights.

Is my plant going to be OK?
While my roommate was moving out of my apartment, long story short, he dropped his bike on my croton houseplant. It had 3 woody shoots coming from the soil, but one of them was cut in half. I'm very upset about this. Will that shoot ever grow back? Do you know how I could help the croton with fertilization to produce another one? It's been with me for nearly 2 years, I couldn't stand to throw it away. Is there anything I can do? I'd hate to have to get rid of something I invested so much care and time into. Thanks.
Is my plant going to be OK?
I think it will be just fine, plants can recover from this sort of injury. What you could do is get some sharp scissors or secateurs and cut the broken stem back to the nearest leaf. This will remove any damaged tissue and prevent die back in the stem. Then just let the plant do its thing, pretty soon it will send out auxiliary shoots from the sides of the stem. You can remove any unwanted shoots at this stage so it will have as many branches as you want.
In my opinion, houseplants do not need to be fertilised at all, they benefit more from being re-potted into fresh soil every few years. But if you really want to fertilise use a slow release during the plants growing season and be extremely sparing.
Reply:Why, yes, it should be just fine. It'll take it a little while, but, yes, it will grow back, just as if you pull the end off of a leaf (of a living plant of course) it will grow back.

My houseplant is a Croton. I think I over fed it with Miracle Gro plant food and it is looking in really bad condition. I repotted it in new peat to take the plant out of the contaminated peat it was in.
but my wife thinks the Croton is already dead. I am not sure as though the leaves are limp downwards than they should be they are still green and have not gone brown. I trimmed off the top part off the plant to maybe help.
Is it really dead or am I having false hope it is alive?

leave in a cool place, not in direct sunlight, dont water. this should bring it back to life..hopefully, water again in a weeks time or until the peat is feeling dry, DO NOT OVER WATER AGAIN.!!!! Use tepid water in the winter.Stand pot on stones/pebble/gravel %26amp; make sure pot base is clear of the water.
Reply:It looks like you've over-watered it. Leave it a few days until the compost has dried before watering it again. In the winter you should only water it very sparingly when the compost is dry. Remember, even though the compost is dry on top, chances are it's still quite damp at the plant's roots. Also, don't feed it with strong food, use a very weak feed, but even then, not until next spring.
Reply:its nice to know u are so concerned about your houseplant but remember its Autumn already and Crotn looses its lustre during this period.at least mines do
Reply:Scratch the woody stem gently with your thumbnail - if it is green underneath the plant is still alive.
I looks ok to me though albeit a bit straggly.
Reply:I am the Harold Shipman of house plants....don't ask me
Reply:just leave it alone in a non harsh environment ie not too much light or draft. do not water cos overwaterings worse than too dry. Give it time - its post shock trauma
Reply:looks like it's still limping along... however... it will not be beautiful again like it's counterpart... I'd use the leafed parts to start new plants and give the main a decent send off....

If I see what I think I see in your photo, then hope is not lost. Are those tiny buds in the notches of the branches of the stem on the right? Regrowth begins almost immediately when a plant has been through something that causes leaves to fall. The plant needs leaves for photosynthesis and regrowth is the most immediate priority and a real sign of recovery.
In any event, you did exactly what you needed to do in order to attempt to rescue the plant.
I won't offer any advice about using care in future with fertilizers. I suspect you learned that all by yourself. :)
Reply:give it some time...wait a week and see how it looks...

Am I doing this right?
I'm trying to get a free mamey croton. What I mean is I recently found out that you can break a stem off a already mature croton, plant it and it will re-birth a totally new plant. I think that's frikin awesome, so I went to lowes, bought a little pot, and some miracle grow potting mix. My apartment has TONES of crotons (duh, they are nice looking hardy plants) so I broke off a little branch and planted it...the thing is I'm just worried I did it wrong or it wont last...
It's kind of loose in the soil, and it leans because of the more blooms on one side...but will it work? It;'s night time that's why it's under a lamp. Another thing I'm wondering is this croton branch I took was outside...but I'm trying to make it an indoor plant is it going to be hard to condition it to be an indoor plant?
Am I doing this right?
You can root crotons easily. Look up Croton Mania web-site. It has really good information on cuttings. I found the best results were when I removed all the leaves. The cutting soon made new leaves. Hormone rooting powder helps too. You should have no trouble with growing them indoor as long as they get good natural light. Good Luck.
P.S. Takes about four weeks to root, plant several together for better impact.

Will my crotons live?
I am in FL. We had one night of freeze last month and I didn't cover my big beautiful croton bush. All of the leaves have fallen off and it is not growing new leaves. Is it done? Or can I get it back somehow?
Will my crotons live?
Dropping leaves is common for crotons that have been damaged by cold weather. If the croton is close to a building or trees it may have survived despite some damage. Where in Florida do you live? I'm near Orlando, I just peeked at my crotons and there are new leaf buds showing already, if you live further north, your crotons may not have buds yet. Crotons can be killed by long periods of cold weather, but mine have survived some hard freezes....mainly because they are close to a wall at my house.
We're expecting cold weather again this week. I'd wait for another week or two, and then give the croton a heavy pruning. March is the best time to do heavy pruning, after the threat of freezes has past. Be sure to water the bush once a week to help it along, and fertize it during March. You should know within a month if the croton has survived.
Reply:Thanks! Good luck! Report It
Reply:they should be back by April when it will get more warm during the night. or the plants were too old to start with so I would replace them around the same time (April).
Reply:crotons are lovely in soup,,,,,,mmmm yeah :)

What causes a white powdery covering on the underside of croton plant leaves?
White thrip or mealy bugs. They suck the sap out of the plants. You can spray them with isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or wipe them off with soapy water. My experience is that this condition is terminal--very very frustrating.

What are the tick looking insects on my Codiaeum(croton) plant?
For the past year my codium has been producing unusual growth on 1/3 of it branches. The stem gets about 5cm X 1cm wide. the tips have multiple but dwarfed nodes and leaf buds all over them.
I noticed some small brown insects that resemble ticks(like dog or cattle ticks but smaller) attached to the plant.
I have never seen this insect before. I know a lot about scales, mealy bugs and other plant bests but wouldn't have a clue what these are
What are the tick looking insects on my Codiaeum(croton) plant?
Maybe it is a kind of smaller tick, like a deer tick. Does it eat the plant?
Reply:There are lots of different types of scale. If they are atatched to the main parts of the stem that is most likely what they are. They could also be afids. Afids come in a wide variety of colors....even pink! In any event you can treat them the same way. Scale is harder to get rid of, but systemic granules do a nice job. in the interum try putting some rubbing alcohol on them to keep them in check. Hope I helped! Keep diggin' in the dirt.

Reply:Croton is an extensive plant genus of the family Euphorbiaceae established by Carolus Linnaeus in 1737. The common name for this genus is rushfoil and croton, but this latter also refers to Codiaeum variegatum. The genus name comes from Greek Kroton, which means ticks, because of the seeds' resemblance to ticks.
The best known member of this genus is probably Croton tiglium, commonly called croton, a tree or shrub native to Southeast Asia. Croton oil, used in herbal medicine as a violent purgative, is extracted from its seeds. Nowadays, it is considered unsafe and it is no longer listed in the pharmacopeias of many countries.
Croton oil has found recent usage as the active ingredient in facial rejuvenating chemical peels when used in a phenol based solution, thanks to its caustic exfoliating effect on the dermal layer of the skin.
Croton species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Schinia citrinellus, which feeds exclusively on the plant.
Cascarilla (Croton Eleuteria) is found exclusively in the Bahama Islands. It is a small tree rarely reaching 20 feet in height, with scanty, alternate, ovate-lanceolate leaves, averaging 2 inches long, closely-scaled below, giving a metallic silver-bronze appearance, with scattered, white scales above. The flowers are small, with white petals, and very fragrant, appearing in March and April. The scented bark is fissured, and pale yellowish brown. Its pungent-smelling bark is used as a flavoring, principly for liquers such as Campari.

Did i waste my money buying a croton watch?
If you spent more than $25 for a watch for the purpose of keeping time, then you've spent too much. If you think it's beautiful, then you've made a good purchase.

Men would you rather get a croton or invicta watch?
My dad loves his invicta verses his croton. I personally love invictas more- but I'm of course a chick. I think they are just to beautifully designed.
Also- the other thing that I like about Invictas is the fact that the watch part itself, is sapphire crystal, which makes it nearly impossible to crack or break. I say nearly cause my brother in law did in fact break it, which was pretty incredible but typically hard to break. I never heard about the lifetime warranty on the croton, but its the design that I like about the Invicta vs. the Croton. So that is what you have to decide on.

does it really matter what watch man should get?
Reply:i'l go with invicta. i have 2 invicta watches and im planning to buy more for my collection. although croton is much cheaper.

How to take care of a croton bell house plant?
I have already heard of opinions to take care of this plant. I would apreciate more input to the care of this plant becuase this plant is starting to wilt big time. I have transplanted into a bigger pot when i got it home and also watered it good.
How to take care of a croton bell house plant?
They do best when they get 4 or more hours of direct sunlight a day. The night temp should be 65-70 deg F. Daytime: 75-85 is ideal. The leaves drop off in a draft especially in winter. Keep soil barely moist at all times--not wet. Fert with a 5-10-5 in March and May and not for the rest of the year. All-purpose potting soil is fine.
Reply:Crotons need bright light. It doesn't need to be in a really sunny window, but some direct sun with plenty of bright indirect light is best. The other important thing is to let them dry out between waterings. Stick your finger into the soil and when the top 2-3 inches are dry, water thoroughly. Wilting is often (not always) caused by overwatering.

I have a brand new "Croton" watch that is supposed to be WATER RESISTANT-but it has droplets inside-how to fix
How do I remove this moisture-which has become a part of the inner watchface and I have tried a hairdryer and a lighter but neither worked!
I have a brand new "Croton" watch that is supposed to be WATER RESISTANT-but it has droplets inside-how to fix
open the back and let the moisture escape
Reply:I would return it to where you bought for an exchange or repair. That is just not right.
If this is not an option -
Take it to jeweler who can remove the crystal and dry it properly without damging the workings

I just bought a fire croton. It was a beautiful plant, but has since lost many leaves. Will it recover?
The plant has dropped many leaves to where it looks very skinny. It is in front of a west window, gets misted daily for humidity, and is away from drafts. When I bought it, it was root bound, so I repotted in the appropriate pot. I need to know if this is from changing environments from the store to home, or from being repotted, or both. Most importantly, will the plant recover? I have even lost new growth on the plant. The leaves do not yellow, they just simply drop off.

Don't blame yourself. Croton and other tropical plants like it really have delayed reaction times to abuse, like over and under watering. It is possible the the damage was done weeks before you bought it and it is just showing the repercussions now. It may also be the transplant shock that is causing the die back. Root systems have sealed off in the move and this is causing certain parts of the plants to die. Try not to over water, allow it to become semi dry before watering with room temp. water and don't let it sit in excess water. Bright but indirect light is best and try a 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer. Tropical plants actually prefer to be a little root bound so it may not have needed to be transplanted. Hopefully the new pot was only about 1" or so bigger than the old one? This keeps the plant from sitting in too much moisture that can lead to rotting of the roots.

Has anyone got a Croton plant? what do you think of it?
If you want a plant with very unusual foliage and lots of color this is the plant for you. They're also pretty easy to care for--no elaborate procedures. Fert. about every 2-3 months.

I've got a 'Croton' and a red chrysanthemum?
Other than the other fall colors, yellow and orange chrysanthemums, what other color and plant would look great on my front porch?
I've got a 'Croton' and a red chrysanthemum?
Asters sedum and ornamental cabbages and kale....
Reply:Geraniums are quite hardy if planted in a sheltered spot and the varied colours look great.
Pansies will flower all year round, try mixing them with varigated ivy.
Hebes also are hardy and will flower for long periods too. Look out for the varigated leaf varieties.

Can i transfer between the Harlem and Hudson lines of Metro North in NY? Maybe at croton-harmon?
I want to go from poughkeepsie to Valhalla,
Can i transfer between the Harlem and Hudson lines of Metro North in NY? Maybe at croton-harmon?
No, both Harlem and Hudson Lines does not intercept each other. Only in Manhattan.
There are few options you could connect.
1. At Croton-Harmon, take W14 or W11 (AM Rush Hour) to White Plains for Hudson Line.
2. At Dobbs Ferry and Scarsdale, connect via BL 66 bus.
There are many transfer point that connect via Bee-Line.
You only could use MetroCard.
Bee-Line local buses are $2 as of March 2nd.
Reply:You can't transfer from the Hudson to Harlem line until 125th Street.
What you CAN do though, and save a lot of time doing it, is to get out at the Tarrytown train station. Take the Westchester Bee-Line Route 13 bus to White Plains. It will stop at the Harlem Line Metro-North station in White Plains. From there you can grab a train to Valhalla.
Reply:You can transfer between the Harlem and Hudson lines at either of the Manhattan Metro-North stations (Grand Central Terminal and 125th Street).
The Harlem line does not stop at Croton-Harmon.

What keeps a croton from growing? I have had one for about 2 years, it still hasn't filled out.?
The pot I planted it in was only about 2 times bigger than the pot it came in, I fertilize with all-purpose houseplant food about once every other month. I have it in a room that gets indirect sunlight. I don't know anything else I could do for it.
Thanks for any help on this!
What keeps a croton from growing? I have had one for about 2 years, it still hasn't filled out.?
Croton plants are known for their bright tropical foliage, which is multi-colored and exotic in appearance. The foliage contains stiff leaves pointing upward and has a wax-like feel to them. The Croton plant requires moderate to bright light, so keep the plant within 3 - 5 feet of a window receiving sunlight.
Croton plant varieties require heavy watering as well as high humidity. Misting the plant once or twice a week appears to be sufficient for accommodating the Croton's humidity needs if you live in an area with low humidity levels. Keep the plants soil moist at all times.
If leaves begin to fall off or slope downward, you are probably not providing the plant with enough water. If the leaves edges become wilted, this may be an indication that you are over watering the plant. Try cutting down on how often you water and see if that improves the leaves appearance. The Croton also prefers warm temperatures up to 80 degrees F.
Overall, I have found that Croton's are a medium to high maintenance house plant. They are extremely touchy in terms of how much water they are given or not given.
Crotons are one of the many poisonous houseplants. Please keep these houseplants up and away from pets and children.
Reply:They will wilt if the soil completely dries out. Crisp crunchy leaf ends indicate soil is staying too moist. Cut off the top of the stem, back to the joining leaf or axil. This keeps them bushy.
This site has tips on growing these plants. Maybe it can help.

Reply:Any plant that's put in a pot that much bigger won't produce for you because the roots are taking over in the available space.

Leaves on my Croton plant?
I just got it a week ago, I live in MN. Some of the big leaves got bent and cracked in them during transplant to home.. so the plant in some areas looks like it's dying because those leaves bent downward...
It looks depressing that way, what should I do about/with the leaves?
Leaves on my Croton plant?
I had the same problem, I just trimmed them to neaten them and let new ones grow
Reply:what does it look like now?
Reply:If you really can't stand looking at them, you can cut them to form a v-shaped tip at the end, so that the cracked part is removed. But, that will change the shape of the plant.
Or, you can go get another one and be more careful with it this time.

Is a Croton plant poisonous? is it safe to have in the house with small children?
Look here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croton_%28g...
It says that the plant was once used as a violent purgorative. Basically, that means that if you eat it, you will vomit violently. NO, I would not have this around children. Hope this helps.

I transplanted the croton plant when I got home, and within 2 days the leaves were falling off.
What is the best way to care for my croton plant? I just recently got it and the leaves are falling off?
The plant is probably going through re-acclimation to a new location.
It needs to be kept away from cool drafts.
A dip below 60 F can set it off to dropping leaves.
Mist the leaves in the winter with distilled water to keep humidity up and keep it in a continuously warm location. Water sparingly between now and April, then begin normal liberal waterings. Good luck!
If the plant is alive, you should start to see new leaves forming in about three to four weeks.
Reply:Your Croton just experienced a lot of shock. Moving and transplanting are very stressful on plants and you will expect to loose a few leaves. Also when plants are shipped from nurseries to stores to homes, they will be mad for a while. A lot of times employees at garden centers are not experienced enough to know what to do other than keep them alive for a week after the shipment comes in. And a lot of tropical plants like to be in small containers so its not necessary to transplant them for a while. Don't give it any fertilizer for a couple weeks and then if you decide to, let it be a really light solution of it. If your croton hasn't lost all of its leaves, it should perk back up.
Reply:I have several tropicals, one being a Croton. The leaves on mine fall off also. My best advice is to make sure you replant it in a soil for tropical plants- found at most stores (I got mine at Lowe's). Also, make sure it is in a big enough pot to support growth. When I first got mine, I tried using regular potting soil, and the plants would not grow. After changing the soil, they did great and are huge now. Then just make sure the soil is moist all the time. The leaves at the bottom of the plant tend to fall off of mine, but it seems it's at time's when it doesn't get watered regularly. I also try to keep mine in a room that stays above 70 degree's. In the winter, I usually keep a space heater in the room with my plants- to regulate the temperature. I usually set the heater for 75. I don't believe these plants are hard to grow at all. Mine requires minimal effort. It is a Croton Mamey, and the thing I love about it the most is the fact that if the leaves are droopy, it needs water! And it's colorful. If in doubt, take it back and exchange it for a healthier plant. Most stores have warranties- for up to a year- if it dies.

Umm i really need some help with my croton?
ok so i look at the croton and theres white dust on the upper side of the leaves.what is this mysterious white dust? is it pollen or spores or some kind of form of germination?because if its bad i wanna wipe it off... and BTW I'm sure its not dust from my house because it just started showing up today and it hasn't had this ever before so its NOT from my house
Umm i really need some help with my croton?
I know exactly what you are talking about! It is a type of mildew that grows on outdoor plants and trees aimlessly, yet remediable. Ortho puts out a mildew treatment you use in a garden sprayer. It worked for my lilacs and evergreen tree. You can find this mildew treatment at most garden centers in or near your town. Look for white powder mildew in the directions or list of what that product treats so you know you have the correct one. There are other brands that have treatments for this stuff, but I like Ortho. Not expensive either.Try the UC Davis link, it will explain in further detail.

Reply:Powdery mildew - caused by lack of ventilation, high humidity. I cured it on a plant of mine by using (yes, really) fresh coffee grounds sprinkled on top of the soil, watered in with beer. No kidding.
good luck
Reply:It's mildew, and any leaves with it are dead. I would reccomend you remove all the leaves you see with the dust on them, so it doesn't spread too much... if most of the plant is covered with it, then it is pretty much lost, but you may be able to get some kind of treatment. As a last ditch effort, you could try snipping it all down to the base and letting it start over.

I enjoy collecting different types of plants. I plan to start a croton plant collection. I saw a reference to a person who has 300 varieties in his collection but I couldn't track him down to find out his source.
